Torah perspective
The border residents' warning about pre-Oct. 7 complacency cuts to a deep Torah truth. The command to remember Amalek is not about ancient history. It is about the human tendency to normalize threat, to let vigilance erode when danger becomes familiar. The same dynamic appears in the wilderness: after the manna fell each day, some tried to hoard it for tomorrow, refusing to trust that tomorrow would come with its own needs. The Torah insists on fresh eyes, on waking each morning to reality as it is, not as routine has dulled it. Complacency is not peace. It is the slow forgetting that what saved us yesterday will not save us today unless we remain awake.
