Torah perspective
The slogan "מי שאינו לומד - ישרת" cuts to a deep tension in Jewish life. Torah study is not a privilege for the few but the inheritance of every Jew, as the sages taught that the crown of Torah is available to all. Yet when learning becomes an exemption from collective responsibility, the crown becomes a wall. The true Torah vision is not study OR service, but study that fuels service, and service that honors the study. A healthy community needs both the scholar who gives his life to Torah and the working Jew who sustains the nation with his labor and his learning in the hours he can spare.
