Torah perspective
Michel Cojot survived the Holocaust, hunted Nazis, and then, on a tarmac in Entebbe, chose to stay with strangers rather than walk free. The Torah's word for such a person is not hero but arev, a guarantor: one who has bound his own fate to another's. When the Jewish people stood at Sinai, the sages teach, every soul present became responsible for every other, across all generations. Cojot's quiet refusal to leave the hostages behind was that covenant made flesh. Greatness rarely announces itself. It looks like a man standing still when he could run.
