Torah perspective
A Jewish student at Wisconsin tucked his Magen David into his shirt before approaching a protest table, then walked away without it restored. That small gesture carries the whole weight of the moment: grief that must be hidden to be safe, mourning that must be argued before it is permitted. The Torah's law of the mourner is precise. The one in grief is exempt from positive commandments, freed from obligation, because the soul needs room to sit with its loss. What happens when a community is denied even that room, when its dead must first be defended as worthy of tears? The Talmud records that God Himself mourns. We are permitted to as well, without first proving the legitimacy of our sorrow.
